The cartouche is encoded using two code points for the start and end, F1990 SITELEN PONA START OF CARTOUCHE and F1991 SITELEN PONA END OF CARTOUCHE, analogous to an opening and closing parenthesis. Fonts that implement this script should include OpenType features which add lines above and below any logographs that appear between these two code points, giving the cartouche the enclosed appearance that can be seen above. The long pi is encoded using F194D SITELEN PONA IDEOGRAPH PI followed by a zero-width F1997 SITELEN PONA START OF LONG GLYPH character. The end of the long pi is indicated by a corresponding F1998 SITELEN PONA END OF LONG GLYPH character. Similar to long pi, these are encoded by following the head word with the F1997 SITELEN PONA START OF LONG GLYPH character and ending the sequence of related words with the F1998 SITELEN PONA END OF LONG GLYPH character. For groups of related words appearing before the head word, two other zero-width characters, F199A SITELEN PONA START OF REVERSE LONG GLYPH and F199B SITELEN PONA END OF REVERSE LONG GLYPH, are used in a similar manner; however, this feature has been deprecated and its use is now discouraged.

LONG GLYPH EXTENSION, which adds the extension under the previous
glyph. (Direct access to the glyph variants of the head word will also be
needed in this case, but the encoding of these is up to the font designer.)
However, encoding long glyphs this way is discouraged.
This may be accomplished using a zero-width joiner. If more control is desired over the composition of the glyph components, F1995 SITELEN PONA STACKING JOINER or F1996 SITELEN PONA SCALING JOINER may be used in place of a zero-width joiner. F1995 SITELEN PONA STACKING JOINER specifies that the second glyph should be stacked on top of the first glyph, and F1996 SITELEN PONA SCALING JOINER specifies that the second glyph should be scaled and placed inside the first glyph. It is up to the font designer to decide which composite glyphs to support. Here is an example of how this may be achieved using OpenType ligatures:
